Igniting STEM Learning through Nature Education

OUTLINE

Age range taught: Kindy – Prep 
At Lobethal Kindergarten they have a strong nature pedagogy and a focus on reflective practice. Join the staff as they share their journey from toys to tools, to Nature Play, to Nature Education. The presenters will share how their Bush Kindy Program is inspiring learning dispositions vital to STEM learning.

PRESENTERS

Nell Ward has over 20 years of experience working in the Early Childhood Sector. She has worked at Lobethal Community Kindergarten on and off over the past 14 years and has witnessed the centre’s shift from toys to tools, to Nature Play and finally to Nature Education. The staff team at Lobethal Community Kindergarten are committed to reflective practice and Nature Education and run a renowned Bush Kindy program called ‘Nature Connect’. The Kindergarten is a STEM lead learning site of best practice for DECD.

Lee Munn is a Preschool Director with 25 years of teaching experience. She began her career in Junior Primary education but has been working with Preschool children since 2003. She is a strong advocate for Nature Pedagogy and was the founder of Lobethal Kindergarten’s _Nature Connect_ Bush Kindy program. Lobethal Kindergarten began its Nature Pedagogy journey in 2013 with adecision to replace toys with tools and host _Outdoor Weeks_ – this led staff and families on a learning journey that has influenced the site’s current Bush Kindy program. Under Lee’s leadership Lobethal Community Kindergarten has become a DECD STEM Lead Learning Site committed to reflective practice and Nature Pedagogy.

Kerry Harten is a Preschool educator with 17 years of experience in Preschool settings. Kerry joined the Lobethal Kindergarten team in 2015. She has a strong focus on STEM learning for children through a play-based learning environment. Kerry also has a strong interest in Digital Technologies as powerful learning tools. Kerry is committed to engaging reluctant learners through dramatic science experiments and a child-led, child-focussed curriculum_
